Dear Elder Maxwell William Petersen,
We congratulate you on your recent assignment to serve as a trainer to Elder Christensen as he
As you undertake your new responsibility, please prayerfully read and ponder the instructions given in Missionary Standards for Jesus Christ 2.1.3, 2.1.4, and 2.1.5 and particularly your responsibilities as a trainer as outlined in 7.1 of the supplemental information to the Missionary Standards. Training a missionary is vital as we continue to build on what they have been taught in the MTC. Through your example and guidance he will understand how to study effectively, develop and practice important finding and teaching skills, and become a diligent and obedient disciple of Jesus Christ. As you remember, these first few weeks are the foundation of understanding and seeing in practice our purpose as missionaries as we ‘invite others to come unto Christ by helping them receive the restored Gospel.’ It is our prayer that all new missionaries will have many opportunities to find and teach people, and then be blessed to see them progress along the covenant path. Pray diligently, seek revelation, and work hard to help this happen.
Please be sure to use these tools as your principle guides:
- Scriptures, particularly the Book of Mormon
- Preach My Gospel
- 12 Week Training Guide
- Missionary Standards for Disciples of Jesus Christ
- Adjusting to Missionary Life
- Safeguards for Using Technology
Allow your companion to participate in all that you do. New missionaries come prepared and are ready to contribute valuable insights and add their testimony as you study and teach together. Please continually refer to and use “Adjusting to Missionary Life”. Strive to help your companion become a Christ-Centered and Preach My Gospel focused missionary with goals that are inspired, specific and attainable. Be an example of a diligent, dedicated and obedient disciple of Jesus Christ. You will be an extension of the Savior as you serve your companion with kindness, patience and charity. Read, ponder, and apply the principles in D&C 121:39-46.
As you listen carefully to the promptings of the Holy Ghost, you will know the specific ways you can help him throughout his
